Contributor Covenant code of conduct

Our pledge

We pledge to make our community welcoming, safe, and equitable for everyone. We respect each person's dignity, rights, and contributions, regardless of race, ethnicity, caste, color, age, physical characteristics, neurodiversity, disability, sex or gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, language, philosophy or religion, national or social origin, socio-economic position, level of education, or other status.

Everyone who participates in good faith and follows this code of conduct has the same privileges of participation.

Encouraged behaviors

Social norms differ. Culture, background, and native language can affect how someone understands our words and actions, even when we intend something different.

We agree to:

  • Respect the purpose of the community, its activities, and how it gathers.
  • Engage kindly and honestly with others.
  • Respect different viewpoints and experiences.
  • Take responsibility for our actions and contributions.
  • Give and accept constructive feedback with care.
  • Work to repair harm when it occurs.
  • Act in ways that support the community's well-being.

Restricted behaviors

The following behaviors, threats to engage in them, and promotion of them violate this code of conduct:

  • Harassment, including violating clearly expressed boundaries or continuing unnecessary personal attention after someone asks for it to stop.
  • Character attacks, including insulting, demeaning, or derogatory comments directed at a community member or group.
  • Stereotyping or discrimination, including characterizing someone's personality or behavior based on immutable identities or traits.
  • Sexualization, including behavior that would generally be considered inappropriately intimate for the community's context or purpose.
  • Violating confidentiality by sharing or acting on someone's personal or private information without permission.
  • Endangering people by causing, encouraging, or threatening violence or other harm toward a person or group.
  • Other behavior that threatens the community's well-being.

The following are also restricted:

  • Impersonating someone or using a false identity to evade enforcement.
  • Failing to credit the sources of contributed content.
  • Sharing marketing or commercial content outside the community's norms.
  • Presenting content that includes, links to, or describes restricted behavior without communicating responsibly about it.

Report an issue

Disagreements can happen even when people are trying to work together. Not every conflict is a code of conduct violation. These expectations help prevent conflict and reduce harm.

Report possible violations to the project team at contact+github@ndjm.ca. Project maintainers act as the community moderators.

Maintainers take reports seriously and make every effort to respond promptly. They investigate reports by reviewing relevant messages, logs, or recordings, or speaking with witnesses and other participants.

Maintainers keep investigations and enforcement as transparent as possible while prioritizing safety and confidentiality. They carry out enforcement actions privately with the people involved. A mutually agreed resolution may include communication with the wider community.

Addressing and repairing harm

When an investigation finds a violation, maintainers may use the following steps to determine a response. They consider the impact on the people involved and the wider community. Serious violations may require skipping earlier steps.

Warning

A single incident or series of incidents may result in a private written warning.

Repair may include a private written apology, accepting responsibility, and asking for clarification about expectations.

Temporarily limited activities

A repeated violation after a warning, or a first, more serious violation, may result in a private written warning and a temporary restriction on participation. The restriction may apply to specific communication channels or interactions with particular people.

This period gives those involved time to process what happened. Repair may include an apology, reflection on the impact of the behavior, and care when returning to community spaces.

Temporary suspension

Repeated violations that warnings have not resolved, or a single serious violation, may result in a temporary suspension. Maintainers provide a private written warning with conditions for returning.

Repair includes respecting the suspension, meeting the conditions for return, and considering how to rejoin the community without repeating the harm.

Permanent ban

Repeated violations that other responses have failed to resolve, or a violation so serious that continued membership would make the community unsafe, may result in a permanent ban.

A permanent ban removes access to all community spaces, tools, and communication channels. Maintainers should use it rarely, with strong reasons, and generally after other remedies have failed to change the behavior. There is no repair that restores participation under a permanent ban.

These steps guide enforcement. Maintainers may use their judgment to protect the community's best interests.

Maintainers who do not follow or enforce this code of conduct in good faith may face temporary or permanent consequences, as determined by other members of the project's leadership.

Scope

This code of conduct applies within all project community spaces and when someone officially represents the community elsewhere.

Examples include using an official project email address, posting through an official social media account, or acting as an appointed representative at an online or offline event.

Attribution

This code of conduct is adapted from Contributor Covenant, version 3.0. We have revised the wording, identified project maintainers as moderators, added our reporting contact, and retained our maintainer-accountability provision.
